How GYMPY solves the housing crisis in Melbourne
The housing crisis in Melbourne has been put into the spotlight after ABC wrote an article that talks about the current situation of hundreds of homeless youths in Melbourne’s outer south who have nowhere to go.
99aupairs has also been invited by Inside Small Business to discuss this alarming situation and how we can help resolve this crisis once and for all.
The Problem
We’ve shared with ISB two major issues that many people are wrestling with: the housing crisis and the childcare crisis. This belief is backed up by statistics: 37 per cent of young people aged 20-24 experience housing stress, according to AIHW; and young people are asked to pay $300-400/week, up to half their wages, according to the ABC article.
We also shared our take on the childcare crisis with the Sydney Morning Herald in a recent article, which later on got picked up by The Age. It is apparent that the rising childcare cost is an existing problem that must be addressed to help our working parents who only wants the best care for their children.
The Answer
To help resolve the childcare and housing crisis, we at 99aupairs have created a program, that matches young people who are keen and ready to move out from home with host families who need additional support with their kids.
The Gap Year Mentorship Program for Youth (GYMPY) is designed to offer young people the opportunity to glimpse into the lifestyle of a future career path, by placing them with professionals who are already working in the field.
Why should young people join GYMPY?
Here are just some of the benefits young individuals can get from joining the program:
- All expenses + Quality accommodation (i.e. Brighton by the beach) + Pocket Money
- Live and work in one location
- Gain experience towards future career (i.e. Teaching)
- Mentoring by experienced Host Families
- Transferable skills
Young people who want to move out, live elsewhere, experience a different lifestyle, and professions and challenge themselves are those who benefit the most. Apart from the transferable skills (i.e., problem-solving, and communication skills) gained during their placement, they will receive quality accommodation and full board, be mentored by host parents who are experts in different fields, experience a new lifestyle, and earn pocket money that will be helpful for their studies or future endeavours.
Our Host Families vary from doctors, nurses, lawyers, corporate managers and directors, architects and successful business owners. We have had participants we successfully placed from these families who gave us a positive review of their experience.
Young people on the program get full board and food in exchange for 15 hours of basic childcare help, and the host families act as mentors to help guide those youngsters’ future career paths.
